<p> DIED. RAMON J. CAMPS, 67, retired Argentine army general and
former chief of the Buenos Aires police, notorious for his role
in the 1976-83 dictatorship's "dirty war" against suspected
leftists; of prostate cancer; in Buenos Aires. Camps, who claimed
responsibility for as many as 5,000 desaparecidos (disappeared
ones) during his tenure as police chief, was sentenced to 25
years in prison for human-rights abuses in 1986 but later received
a full pardon from President Carlos Saul Menem.
