  16. former chief of the Buenos Aires police, notorious for his role
  17. in the 1976-83 dictatorship's "dirty war" against suspected
  18. leftists; of prostate cancer; in Buenos Aires. Camps, who claimed
  19. responsibility for as many as 5,000 desaparecidos (disappeared
  20. ones) during his tenure as police chief, was sentenced to 25
  21. years in prison for human-rights abuses in 1986 but later received
  22. a full pardon from President Carlos Saul Menem.
